PURPOSE:To enable application; of the title detector to a wide range from a lean region to a rich region by a method wherein a gas diffusing layer covering the whole surface of an electrode on the outside is constructed of a specific porous sintered body and a specific material is used for a layer in a part in the direction of the thickness of the gas diffusing layer. CONSTITUTION:A solid electrolyte 1 is fixed to a plug body 5, and an outer tube 7 for protecting a gas diffusing layer 3 from impurities in an exhaust gas is provided in the fore end of the plug body 5. The gas diffusing layer 3 covering the whole surface of an electrode 2b on the outside is constructed of a porous sintered body of powder of which the main constituent is an electro- insulative metal oxide having an average particle size of 1mum or below, and a material prepared by adding either silicate or aluminosilicate or the mixture thereof to a zirconium oxide is used as the material for a layer in a part in the direction of the thickness of the gas diffusing layer 3. By this method, application to a wide range from a lean region to a rich region can be attained. |
