A detector array for use in an infrared linescanner system scans an area of ground below an aircraft. The detector array comprises a linear array (30) arranged in a symmetrical pattern about a centerline (20) and has an angular overall length sufficient to provide contiguous coverage of the scanning area for a maximum specified velocity-toheight ratio.
