PURPOSE:To obtain alpha-[4-(2,2-dimethylethenyl)phenyl] propionate easily in high yield by effecting selective hydroformylation with a specific diolefin, carbon monoxide and water under specific reaction conditions. CONSTITUTION:1-Vinyl-4-(2,2-dimethylethenyl)benzene, carbon monoxide, water or a lower alcohol such as methanol are allowed to react, preferably in a solvent such as toluene in the presence of a transition metal complex carbonylation catalyst such as bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium dichloride, when needed, in the presence of an acid such as hydrogen chloride as a reaction promoter at 40 to 250 deg.C under pressure of 10 to 600kg/cm<2> whereby selective hydrocarboxylation or hydroesterification is conducted to give the subject compound or its ester which is used as a synthetic intermediate of alpha-(4- isobutylphenyl) propionate (generic name: ibuprofen) having excellent anti- inflammatory action. |
