PURPOSE:To selectively hydroformylate only vinyl group in a specific olefinic mixture containing an olefin competitive with the objective reaction by reacting the above-mentioned mixture with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:An olefinic mixture containing two or more unsaturated hydrocarbons selected from compounds expressed by formulas I and II and p-isobutylstyrene is reacted with CO and H2 in the presence of a transition metal complex carbonylation catalyst under conditions of 40-150 deg.C reaction temperature and 10-600kg/cm<2> total pressure of CO and H2 to selectively hydroformylate only vinyl group in the above-mentioned mixture and economically and advantageously afford the objective compound, expressed by formulas II and IV and useful as an intermediate for alpha-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid (a medicine having high anti-inflammatory effects) from, e.g., a dehydrogenating mixture of p-isobutylethylbenzene without requiring purification of the p- isobutylstyrene to a high purity. |
