PURPOSE:To securely detect whether or not there is a label even if the label surface is curved by deciding whether or not there is the label from the degree of dispersion of the brightness distribution characteristics in an area of constant area on the label. CONSTITUTION:When the area 6 of constant area on the label 2 is extracted, parts of a figure 7 and a character 8 and a blank part 9 coexist and their image are picked up by an image sensor 13 to calculate the brightness distribution characteristics of respective brightness data of respective picture elements constituting the area 6, so that the brightness distribution characteristics are in a slow round shape. When no label is stuck on a body, the body itself appears in the area 6 and brightness distribution characteristics having a sharp peak waveform at a position corresponding to the brightness value of the external surface are obtained. Consequently, an arithmetic part 5 compares the degree of variance which is calculated statistically such as the standard deviation value sigma of the respective brightness distribution characteristics to securely judge whether or not a label is stuck on the body. |
