PURPOSE: To obtain the photographic silver halide emulsion having an improved ratio of sensitivity to fog by containing a specified gelatin having a small content of cysteine. CONSTITUTION: The gelatin-containing photographic emulsion is prepared by precipitating silver halide in the presence of the gelatin and forming the precipitates into featherlike crystals in the presence of the gelatin, and then, when needed, they are redispersed by further adding the gelatin. The gelatin to be used in the precipitation process can be the one in this invention or an oxidized one or an optional mixture of both. The gelatin to be used for the redispersion of silver halide must be the one in this invention having a cysteine content of <=10ppm and a gold value of >=23μmol per 1g of the gelatin, thus permitting restrainment of grain growth to be substantially reduced and the best sensitivity in combination with the least fog to be obtained after chemical aging of the emulsion.
