PURPOSE: To prepare a synthetic melanin aggregate, comprising a melanin pigment incorporated within polymer particles, capable of manifesting ultraviolet absorbing actions and useful as a sunscreen composition. CONSTITUTION: This synthetic melanin aggregate which is a dried powder is prepared by incorporating a melanin pigment into a pore network structure by absorption or polymerization in the interior thereof, then inducing the melanin precursor into melanin by oxidation and polymerization or introducing the melanin pigment by absorption in a melanin solution or a suitable medium or carrier. Preferred polymer particles are noncollapsible beads having at least 10% cross-linking density and 5-100μm average particle diameter. The melanin composition is directly used or compounded with a suitable carrier substrate, a cosmetic, etc., and applied to skin.
