NEW MATERIAL:Glycerin ether derivatives of formula I [R1 is formula II-V; R<2> is H, 1-26C straight or branched chain saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group or -CH2CH(OR)CH2OH]. EXAMPLE:1-O-abiethyl glycerin. USE:Useful as a component of an external preparation for skin. Having an effect for fundamental improvement of moisture retention properties of horny layer and capable of prevention and remedy of skin roughness. The above-mentioned effect is more improved by using a surfactant in combination. Used as a medically external preparation for skin and as cosmetics. PREPARATION:For example, an abiethyl alcohol of R<1>OH is reacted with epichlorohydrin in the presence of a base and the resultant product is reacted with acetone in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst followed by hydrolysis in the presence of an acid catalyst, thus obtaining a compound of formula I.
