CORNEA IMPLANT PIECE AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE: To form a transplantable eye prosthesis containing an optically transparent part and an upper cell layer with which the front of an optical element is covered, by fixing a porous outside skirt to enable a cell grow inward and a tissue to adhere on the circumference of the special optical element respectively. CONSTITUTION: A porous outside skirt 14 is fixed on the circumference of an optical element of an artificial cornea 10. And an optical element 12 contains a front 58 to retain an epithelial cell layers 56 and an optical transparent central part 16, and is made of an optical material whose water content is 50-90% of diffuse nutrient to the epithelical cell 56 through a graft and tensile strength is larger than 20kg/cm<2> to give enough strength to transplant by operative surgery and during use. The outside skirt 14 which is used to fix the optical element 12 on the circumferential tissue of a patient is enough porous to enable a cell to grow inward and a tissue to adhere. It is desirable that this optical element 12 is made from polyvinyl alcohol copolymer hydrogel or a polyvinylpyrrolidone blend.
