The aim of the invention is to use an infra-red technique with an active transmitter on the moving object, without any link to an observation device. This aim is achieved by using a device for locating at least one moving object, the device comprising at least one beacon 30 emitting light signals, the said beacon being attached to the moving object to be located, an optical device 10 forming an image of the beacon and a sensor 15 of the position of the image with respect to the optic axis of the optical device, the said sensor comprising a position-detecting photocell retrieving the position elements of the received light in order to determine its centre of gravity; the image-forming optical device 10 consists of a lens 20; the light signals are time coded; and the sensor 15 is associated with an electronic unit 25 operating in synchronism with the encoding of the light signals. <IMAGE>
