CARBON CATHODE BLOCK FOR ALUMINUM ELECTROLYTIC FURNACE

PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon cathode block for Al electrolysis with enhanced wear resistance by blending a specified amount of calcined anthracite having a specified grain size with carbonaceous aggregate composed chiefly of coal pitch coke and petroleum coke. CONSTITUTION:A blend consisting of 5-30wt% calcined anthracite having <= about 2mm. grain size and the balance carbonaceous aggregate composed chiefly of coal pitch coke and petroleum coke is kneaded with a binder and molded. The molding is charged into a calcining furnace and calcined at a high temp. to form a carbon cathode block for Al electrolysis. The block has improved necessary characteristics, especially improved wear resistance owing to the blended calcined anthracite having the specified grain size.
