Reciprocating piston engine comprising two crankshafts doubly coupled to one another. On the one hand the crankshaft axes are connected to one another by one or more mechanisms (for example gear train), on the other the cranks are coupled to one another by two connecting rods. The connecting rod of the piston can be fixed at any point of either of the two connecting rods of the crankshafts by a joint, according to the desired parameters (also on their common bearings). The transmission ratios of the two crankshafts and their phases can also be different depending on the required parameters. The cylinder is adjustable in relation to the crankshafts and the individual cylinders may be arranged both in a V and in line. The parameters of the drive system can be combined with one another so that a reciprocating movement of the piston is achieved in the four-stroke cycle with two virtually identical top dead centres and two different bottom dead centres. The shorter reciprocating movement of the piston corresponds to the intake and compression stroke and the longer reciprocating movement to the power and exhaust stroke. By means of the differentiated stroke lengths, an additional quantity of mechanical energy is achieved compared to the conventional four-stroke engine for the same quantity of fuel.
