PURPOSE:To prevent a character picture from being erroneously discriminated to be a gradation picture and to improve the recording quality by classifying a picture signal into plural types in a picture element unit and further, re- discriminating and classifying. CONSTITUTION:At a picture processor 30 in which a picture signal is supplied, a mixed picture discriminating means 40 to judge whether a character picture or a gradation picture is obtained for respective picture elements, by the information obtained from an input picture is provided. A first discriminating means 40A to constitute the mixed picture discriminating means 40 discriminates the character picture and the gradation picture from the mixed picture and a first picture discriminating output corresponding to it is formed. Further, by a second discriminating means 40B, the picture discriminating output of the gradation picture included in the first picture output corresponding to the character picture is re-discriminated, and a second picture discriminating output to correct the discriminating output erroneously discriminated to be the gradation picture as the discriminating output for the character picture is obtained. Thus, even at the time of being like a small character picture, this can be surely discriminated as the character picture. |
