The invention provides a method for determining the presence of an analyte 11 in a body fluid consisting essentially of: (a) contacting a surface 2 with said fluid, said surface 2 being coated with receptor reagent 10 specifically reactive with said analyte 11; to form a complex 12; (b) contacting the coated surface 2 with immune reagent 13 comprising immune compound 14 specifically reactive with the receptor reagent or, as illustrated, specifically reactive with a complex 12 of the analyte and receptor reagent, said immune compound 14 being coated on reactance tags 15 which are particles capable of affecting electrical reactance; (c) removing unreacted immune reagent 13 from the surface 2; and (d) measuring the electric reactance of the surface, due to those particles 15 which remain bonded 16 to the surface 2. The invention also provides an automated analytical system suitable for use in the said method. Dielectric, conductive or magnetic particles may be used. Ferromagnetic particles are preferred, to be used with apparatus which magnetises the surface 2 in the manner of a tape-recorder. <IMAGE> |
