摘要 In a continuous casting of a hollow ingot (15) by means of a forcedly cooled outer mold (1) and a core (16), gas is introduced (23, 24) around an outer peripheral surface of the core (16) to form an annular gap surrounding an inner peripheral surface of the molten metal (9), and gas pressure is applied on said inner peripheral surface of the molten metal (9). The core (16) may, or may not, be force-cooled. Lubricating oil is separately introduced from both the mould, via slits (6), and the core (16), via a passage (26) and slits or pores. Upper regions of the core (16) may be lined with insulating refractory material to delay solidification at the inner periphery of the molten metal. The lining may be detachable from the core with the initially-solidified metal; the outer mould may be similarly lined. Insulating material may extend over at least part of the melt-contacting surface of the starter block. Embodiments of starter block shaped to provide rapid clearance for cooling water and escaping molten metal are described. <IMAGE>
