PURPOSE:To convert hydrophobic polymer particles into hydrophilic polymer particles by irradiating powder to be treated with short wavelength ultraviolet rays and also imparting ultrasonic wave vibration to the powder to be treated and performing surface treatment while rolling this powder. CONSTITUTION:Vacuum ultraviolet rays or short wavelength ultraviolet rays of 1,600-2,000Angstrom are generated by utilizing a high-frequency power source 8 of 5kHz-1MHz. Powder to be treated e.g. of hydrophobic polymer particles such as nylon and polystyrene is irradiated with the above-mentioned ultraviolet rays in the acting gas atmosphere and also imparted with ultrasonic wave vibration and surface treatment is performed while rolling this powder to be treated. Dehydrogenation from the surface of polymer particles and ring cleavage of benzene ring are performed by irradiation of ultraviolet rays in accordance with the kind of the utilized acting gas and thereby hydrophobic polymer particles are coverted into hydrophilic polymer particles. Further in this reaction, the acting gas is allowed to act on the polymer while performing pressure regulation of a closed vessel 3 in the interval of 760-0.01Torr. |
