PURPOSE:To execute an address operation at a high speed by applying a mainte nance pulse and a write pulse by the same timing to discharge cells of different discharge cell areas, respectively. CONSTITUTION:An erase pulse VEY is applied to a discharge cell C1 belonging to one discharge cell area YC, and this erase pulse VEY is opposite in polarity to a maintenance pulse VS which is applied immediately before. By the same timing as this erase pulse VEY, a write pulse VW is applied to a discharge cell C2 belonging to the other different discharge cell area Yb, and this write pulse VW is the same in polarity as the maintenance pulse VS. The discharge cell C1 stops the previous discharge light emission by the erase pulse VEY, and simultaneously, the discharge cell C2 executes newly a discharge light emission by the write pulse VW. In such a way, erase and write are executed simultaneously by the different discharge cells. Therefore, an address operation can be excuted at a high speed. |
