<p>The invention concerns a process for manufacturing water-dilutable coating materials with long storage life based on acrylic resins containing carboxyl and hydroxyl groups and/or their copolymerizates, produced by solution polymerization, wholly or partly etherified, water-dilutable aminoplastics, water-miscible organic solvents, amines and water, characterized in that non water-dilutable, wholly or partly etherified aminoplastics are used and in that the coating material obtained is precondensed in the alkaline region at high temperature.
