A process for treating sulphate-containing aqueous waste streams, which comprises anaerobic microbial reduction of the sulphate using sulphate reducing bacteria, while adding to the reaction mixture an alcohol as carbon/energy source. with concomitant microbial methanogenesis, e.g. in a sludge blanket reactor, a cheap carbon source such as ethanol can be used to control treatment, to recover valuable heavy metals and sulphur, and produce an environmentally-acceptable effluent.
|
