<p>Polyalkylene glycol ethers of aromatic amines or phenolic compounds containing at least two active methylol groups, and/or at least two groups which are capable of reacting with formaldehyde or compounds splitting off formaldehyde or containing active methylol groups, are cross-linked on textile materials by condensation with themselves, with formaldehyde or with compounds splitting off formaldehyde or containing at least two active methylol groups. Active methylol groups are defined as methylol groups linked to nitrogen or to nuclei of phenols, and may be free or etherified by aliphatic alcohols containing 1-8 carbon atoms. Suitable polyalkylene glycol ethers are the reaction products of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with resorcinol, hydroquinone, salicylic acid, aniline or xylidine, the preferred products being those obtained by further reacting these reaction products with polyfunctional compounds which combine with compounds containing hydroxyl groups, e.g. di- or polyisocyanates, di- or polycarboxylic acids, di- or polyvinyl sulphones, polyepoxides or dihydroxyalkyl sulphides, e.g. thiodiglycol. Polyalkylene glycol ethers obtained by the reaction of butylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, styrene oxide, trimethylene oxide or tetrahydrofuran, their polymers or their copolymers with ethylene or propylene oxide, with phenols or with aromatic amines may also be used. The polyalkylene glycol ethers may contain ammonium, sulphonium, carboxyl and/or hydroxyl groups. Suitable compounds splitting off formaldehyde or containing active methylol groups are paraformaldehyde, hexamethylene tetramine, formaldehyde acetals, condensation products of formaldehyde with urea and/or guanidine or melamine, N,N1-dimethylol alkylene- or arylene-dicarboxylic acid diamides, dimethylol p-cresol and tetramethylol-hydrazodicarboxylic acid diamide. The polyalkylene glycol ethers may be applied to the textile materials as aqueous or organic solvent solutions or as aqueous dispersions with the aid of emulsifying or dispersing agents, and cross-linking may be effected by leaving the impregnated materials to stand at room temperature or by heating, preferably in the presence of catalysts, e.g. formic acid, oxalic acid, ammonium sulphate and zinc chloride. Specification 896,999 is referred to.ALSO:Textile materials, e.g. acetate rayon, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide and polyester fibres, are stiffened and rendered anti-static by a process in which polyalkylene glycol ethers of aromatic amines or phenolic compounds containing at least two active methylol groups, and/or at least two groups which are capable of reacting with formaldehyde or compounds splitting off formaldehyde or containing active methylol groups, are cross-linked on the textile materials by condensation with themselves, with formaldehyde or with compounds splitting off formaldehyde or containing at least two active methylol groups. Cross-linking may be effected by leaving the impregnated materials to stand at room temperature or by heating, preferably in the presence of catalysts, e.g. formic acid, oxalic acid, ammonium sulphate and zinc chloride. In Example 7 a pigment is fixed on a polyacrylonitrile or polyamide fabric by padding the fabric with an aqueous liquor containing a polyether prepared from polyethenoxylated resorcinol and thiodiglycol, the tetramethyl ether of tetramethylol hydrazo-dicarboxylic acid diamide, iron oxide pigment or carbon black, the sodium salt of dibutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid and ammonium sulphate, and then drying and heating it to 130 DEG C. for 5 minutes.
