PURPOSE:To facilitate the setting or taking-out of an ink ribbon by providing a distance control means for increasing and decreasing the distance between paper and a printing head and a control means for operating the distance control means so as to make the distance between the paper and the printing head max. when a cover is brought to an open state. CONSTITUTION:A paper thickness sensor 10 detects the thickness of printing paper 9 and a main control part 16 sends a control signal to a gap adjusting motor control part 18 and a gap adjusting motor driving part 19 to operate a gap adjusting motor 11 and an eccentric cam 13 is revolved through a gear 12 to set the gap between a printing head 2 and a platen roller 5 to the optimum state. When a cartridge 8 of an ink ribbon is replaced, a top cover 14 is opened at first and a cover opening detection sensor 15 detects this state to transmit the same to the main control part 16 and a carriage motor is brought to a free state with respect to a carriage motor driving part 17.
