PURPOSE:To prevent cracking and crazing when silica glass is produced by a sol-gel process by hydrolyzing silicon alkoxide in a specified solvent. CONSTITUTION:Silicon alkoxide whose alkyl moiety is preferably 1-4C alkyl or a partial polycondensation product thereof is hydrolyzed in a solvent contg. tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and polyalkylene glycol and/or a deriv. thereof to form silica sol. This sol is poured into a vessel such as a laboratory dish, converted into gel by holding at room temp. to 70 deg.C and dried at room temp. or above for several weeks. The resulting dry gel is sintered by heating to 1,000-1,400 deg.C in the air to obtain silica glass. |
