A magnetic tape cassette player used in road vehicles has a head mounted on a carrier that is moved to operating position involving linear and rotary motion from single drive, and a changeover means for forward and reverse direction playing. The changeover mechanism is mounted on the side of the chassis and has a release unit that controls selective engagement of a pair of gear pinions in relation to the main gear transmission.
