Means for controlling a nuclear reactor are housed in tubes extending through the reactor container but not open to it; the tubes are of material (e.g. Al) of low neutron absorption and strong enough to withstand the pressure inside the container. The control means may be rods of absorbent (e.g. Cd) or fissile material, or both, or a liquid such as a suspension of fuel, or a suspension of Cd in DgO. The rods may be telescopic. Fluid absorber or fuel may be circulated through convoluted tubes, the spacing of whose convolutions may vary. |
