Gas phase process for coating a metal substrate containing carbon or based on metal carbide with compounds of transition metals of group IV or V of the Periodic Classification. This process consists in heating the substrate to be coated to a temperature above 850 DEG C and subjecting it to the action of a gaseous mixture made up of a carrier gas, a halide of a transition metal of group IV or V, a carbon donor and optionally a nitrogen donor, characterised in that the initial molar fraction of the metal halide in a gaseous mixture is lower than or equal to 3 x 10<-3>. Application to the coating of metal or other articles subjected to severe operating conditions, for the purpose of lowering their friction coefficient and/or their wear.
