PURPOSE:To make it possible to set an optimum gap for printing according to the thickness of a printing paper or the like and to automatically control printing speed, by measuring a first change in the gap upon a change from a first reference condition to a second reference condition, and a second change in the gap upon a change from the first reference condition to a third reference condition. CONSTITUTION:The gap between a printing head 35 and a platen 41 is set into each of a first reference condition P1 and a second reference condition P2 corresponding respectively to a maximum gap and a minimum gap in the absence of a printing paper 31 set on the platen 41, and into a third reference condition P3 corresponding to a minimum gap in the presence of the paper 31 set on the platen 41, thereby measuring a first change in the gap upon the change from the first reference condition P1 to the second reference condition P2 and a second change in the gap upon the change from the first reference condition P1 to the third reference condition P3. The first and second changes thus measured are stored in a storage means. A calculating means calculates a printing condition and a printing speed at a given moment, based on the first and second changes stored. |
