An electromagnetic clutch/brake unit comprises circular housings 10, 11 for the solenoids 12, 12a and annular friction elements 16, 16a which are in permanent rubbing contact with an armature disc 15 on the driven shaft 13, such arrangement rendering unnecessary the use of thrust bearings. Housings 10, 11 are respectively coupled to a fixed member 20 and the drive-shaft 23 in such a way as to permit their limited axial movement upon energizing of the solenoids, e.g. by the use of Oldham couplings 21, 22. The elements 16, 16a may be made from a polyfluoride, nylon or asbestos compound. |
