4,4-Dialkyl-azetidinones are prepd. by sulfonating a cpd. of formula (II) with a complex of formula (III), and cyclizing the resulting cpd. of formula (IV) by the treatment with a base. In the formulas, A is benzyloxycarbonyl, p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl or triphenylmethyl; R1 and R2 are each C1-4 alkyl; R3 is benzyl, pnitrobenzyl, benzyloxymethyl or t-butyldimethysilyl; m is 0-3. (I) are useful as antibacterial agents.
