In the case of a horizontal oven for heating up window panes to a bending or tempering temperature, the conveying shafts (56) are shorter than the inside width of the oven compartment and are mounted on gas bearings (1) inside the oven compartment. The sliding surfaces of the gas bearings (1) are subjected to pressurised air to form a film of gas in the bearing gap. Coupling of the conveying shafts (56) to drive shafts (60) situated outside the oven is carried out in each case by means of a coupling rod (58) which penetrates the side wall (55) of the oven and is articulatedly coupled both to the conveying shaft (56) and to the drive shaft (60). <IMAGE>
