PURPOSE: To enable the alteration between monochrome, highlight or process color modes by providing a reciprocally moving cartridge constituted so as to carry a plurality of ink supply cartridges, a means for advancing a recording medium by a predetermined distance and a means urging the dripping of ink from the nozzles of each printing head on demand. CONSTITUTION: Some ink supply cartridges 12 having thermal printing heads 11 integrally attached thereto are mounted on carriages capable of advancing and moving in parallel. During a printing mode, the carriages move on a guide rail 15 reciprocally before and behind as shown by an arrow 13. A recording medium 16 is held to a fixed state during the movement of each carriage in one direction to advance by the distance equal to the height of the stripe of the data printed by each thermal printing head before the carriage is moved in the reverse direction. Each printing head has linear array nozzles arranged in the direction crossing the reciprocally moving direction of each carriage at a right angle. Each thermal printing head accelerates the dripping 18 of ink at a necessary time of dripping during the movement of the carriage for the purpose of data printing. |
