The present invention relates to a method for preventing and/or treating acute pancreatitis. The method involves the administration of a protease inhibitor using a variety of protocols. The preferred protease inhibitor is pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI). The desired level of inhibitor needed in the pancreas would be the amount sufficient to block activity of any activated trypsin present inside the pancreas.
