The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the continuous crushing (crinkling, crumpling, creasing) of textile sheet materials, especially woven and knitted cotton fabrics and blends thereof. The essential features are that the textile fabric is gathered into a rope and fed into a liquor having an appropriate sodium hydroxide concentration, and the causticised rope is compressed (shoved), squeezed off and introduced into a hot reducing bath and into a rinsing and neutralising bath. <IMAGE>
