A barrier, particularly to methane and radon, employs a barrier layer (10) (preferably aluminium) encapsulated in protective layers (14, 16) which are bonded to all of its surfaces and extend beyond its main edges where they are mutually bonded. The protective layers (14, 16) include at least one plastics layer. Typically there is a strengthening layer (14) e.g. of polyester coextrusive with the aluminium (10), the aluminium and polyester being encapsulated by a layer (16) of polyolefin on one face and another layer (16) of polyolefin and/or bitumen at the other face. |
