A method of purging oxygen from a product prior to packing into a container uses an apparatus comprising a tubular nozzle 1 supported on a shroud 5 which surrounds a container. The nozzle 1 has a ring of ports 2A arranged equispaced around its girth and midway along its length and a staggered array of ports 2 either side of said ring to permit entry of a purging gas into the nozzle so that a product falling through the nozzle is purged by a flow of purging gas passing from the ports 2A, 2 to emerge from both ends of the nozzle 1 a great quantity of gas being introduced into the central nozzle zone than at its extremities. An additional port 6 passing through the shroud directs purging gas directly into the container. The benefit of the method is that the amount of oxygen around a particulate produce, such as peanuts, is much reduced to enhance shelf life when packed. <IMAGE> |
