PURPOSE:To perform map matching and indicate an arbitrary area on an electronic map at all times by providing a map data memory unit for detecting the present position and another map data memory unit for drawing a map independently from each other. CONSTITUTION:A present position detecting device 4 performs map matching between a present position newly calculated on the basis of data from a sensor unit 1 and road data obtained from a map data memory unit 21 for detecting a present position, thereby finally determining the present position which is then delivered to a picture drawing device 5. The device 5 reads data for draw ing a map of the neighborhood of the determined present position of a motor car from a map data memory unit 22 which stores data for drawing a map, to indicate the data in the form of a map on a display device 6. At this time, a position mark indicating the position of the car is overlappingly displayed. Moreover, the device 5 can read out a map of an arbitrary area from the mem ory unit 22 by an input from an operating device 3 irrespective of the position of the car, and display the same. |
