PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain a non-oxide ceramic sintered compact having good characteristics free from contamination of oxygen, by blending non-oxide ceramics powder having the surface coated with an oxide or hydrophobic organic material with a water soluble binder and water, then molding the blend into a prescribed shape and sintering the moldings in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Non-oxidizing ceramic powder of Si3N4, AlN, etc., is heat- treated e.g., in air to form a thin oxidized layer on the surface of the powder or the surface of the above-mentioned powder is thinly coated with a hydrophobic organic material, e.g., oil to form a film capable of protecting to oxidation. Then the surface-treated and above-mentioned powder is blended with a water soluble binder such as PVA and water and the blend is molded into a prescribed shape. Then the moldings are preferably subjected to dehydration treatment and the binder is removed by heating and sintered in non-oxidizing atmosphere such as N2 atmosphere. When the sintering is carried out, oxygen covering a raw material powder is released into the atmosphere to provide the sintered compact of non-oxide ceramics extremely reduced in oxygen content as a result or containing no oxygen. |
