The invention relates to a method for knitting a fabric from thin strips packed onto a beam 32a, 32b, of the type consisting in delivering the said thin strips, whilst keeping them under tension, to a knitting needle, and in joining them with an upper embroidery thread and a lower weft embroidery thread by means of a chain-stitch thread. This method is characterised in that the said thin strips are guided so as to keep them flat, parallel to one another, with a spacing which is adapted to allow movements of the needle in vertical translation. The invention extends to a modified knitting machine for implementing this method and to the fabric obtained. <IMAGE>
