In a device for displaying digits or the like by means of tilting segments, the display time is to be shortened during changes and a simple, reliable apparatus is to be created. According to the invention, this is achieved in that each of the segments which are bright on one side is formed by an elongate pallet (1) whose other side is black and which is mounted so as to be pivotable about its longitudinal axis (X-X') between two positions which are located approximately 180@ from each other, where it is placed approximately parallel to the display plane of the device, and in that this pallet is connected in a positively locking manner to a permanent magnet which extends in each of the two previously mentioned positions between the poles of a stator which is formed by steel rods (9, 9') having strong residual magnetism and which is surrounded by at least one coil (10, 10') and connected to means which permit the transmission of electric pulses of very short duration. <IMAGE>
