A description is given of a multi-speed, automatically shiftable step-change gear box, particularly for motor vehicles, which has a planetary gear mechanism (2, 3) arranged in a housing (23) and connected, on the one hand, to an input shaft (1) coming from an engine and, on the other hand, to an output pinion (4) leading to driven wheels and furthermore has power-assisted gear-change elements assigned to the individual elements of the planetary gear mechanism and consisting of clutches (5-7) and brakes (8-10). In order to be able to produce as large a number of gears as possible in the step-change gear box while keeping the outlay on construction and components low, the gear box has the following features: - the planetary gear mechanism consists of two simple planetary gear sets (2; 3) arranged parallel to one another and each having a sun gear (11; 15), an annulus (12; 16) and planet gears (13; 17) arranged between them and supported on a planet carrier (14; 18); - the planet carrier (14) of the first planetary gear set (2) is rigidly connected to the annulus (16) of the second planetary gear set (3) and the annulus (12) of the first planetary gear set (2) is rigidly connected to the sun gear (15) of the second planetary gear set (3); - the planet carrier (18) of the second planetary gear set (3) is rigidly connected to the output pinion (4); - the elements (11, 12, 14) of the first planetary gear set (2) can each be connected via clutches (5, 6, 7) to the input shaft (1) and [...] via brakes (8, 9, 10) on the ...
