The invention relates to a three-dimensional arrangement of waveguides. The three-dimensional waveguide structure consists of a plurality of wave-carrying semiconductor layers having a low energy gap which are vertically separated from each other by wave-barrier layers. The three-dimensional waveguide structure is laterally bounded by embedding the waveguide structure in trenches and/or by controlling the wave-guidance electro-optically.
