Mechanically engageable four-wheel drive for motor vehicles, the drive system of which has an engine, a manual shift transmission, two wheels directly driven by the latter and two wheels driven by way of an engageable propshaft, a differential and two couplable drive shafts, which latter wheels are each provided with a freewheel device, the propshaft clutch and the clutches of the drive shafts of the engageable driving wheels having drive devices for their actuation, in which the drive devices for the clutches (11, 12) are designed as solenoid drive devices (28a, 28b), which comprise an electric motor (41) for the adjustement of an axially moveable output shaft (52) and a mechanical actuating mechanism (50, 44) preferably in the nature of a recirculating ball screw. <IMAGE>
