The piston rod (121) has an axial bore (121) to locate an insert shaft (161) holding a sensor head (151,150) at the end. This has a sliding fit inside a sleeved insert in the end of the bore. The sleeved insert has a spiral groove on the inside and the sensor monitors the displacement w.r.t. the pitch of the groove. The sensor (151',151") is an out of contact sensor whose output changes as the peaks of the thread are passed. This allows a simple logic control, with variable reference point to be established. The sensor has an H-shaped cross section (151) with the ends of the H being out of step with the thread pitch for maximum accuracy and precision. ADVANTAGE - Accurate position control, unaffected by fluid and dirt.
