Tertiary butanol (TBA) is produced by catalytic oxidation of isobutane with molecular oxygen in the liquid phase. In this process, a crude product results which contains TBA and, inter alia, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). TBA is obtained from the crude product by distillative decomposition. For the reaction, a catalyst is used which is a transition metal compound having nitrogen-containing ligands or else a polymeric phthalocyanine. The catalyst is virtually insoluble in the reaction mixture. The crude product is preferably prepared at temperatures from 100 to 135 DEG C and at a pressure in the range from 5 to 50 bar.
