<p>The invention is a neutron range spectrometer (10) and method for determining the neutron energy spectrum of a neutron source (12). Neutrons from the source (16) are collimated and detected by a position sensitive neutron counter (20, 28). The counter (20, 28) determines the position along the axis (26) where the neutrons (16) are absorbed by the absorbing material (24) in the counter (20). From the interaction positions, a computer (32) analyzes the data and determines the energy spectrum of the incident beam (16). The counter (20) is preferably shielded by a neutron-absorbing material (34) such as helium-3. The computer (32) solves a series of equations to determine the number of neutron interactions at a particular location along the axis (26). These equations are used to determine the energy spectrum of the neutron beam (16).</p> |
