PURPOSE:To suppress the occurrence of the surge voltage and extent the life by providing a superconducting member on an excitation section between terminals installed on both sides and forming two or more portions with different cross section areas perpendicular to the exciting direction. CONSTITUTION:The excitation section 1 of a current limiting device 10A is made of a superconducting material and constituted of the minimum-cross section area portion 1a, maximum-cross section area portion 1b, second minimum- cross section area portion 1c, and third minimum-cross section area portion 1d, and the individual cross section areas have the following relationship: 13a<13c<13d<13b, for example. Current limiting inflection points are provided at portions with different cross section areas to increase the resistance between both terminals 2 and 3 in sequence, thus the occurrence of the surge voltage is suppressed, the over-current is quickly limited. A current limiting device withstanding the usage of many times and having a long life is thereby obtained. |
