With the aid of this method, it is possible to identify whether the addresses (a) allocated to the subscriber devices (TLN) occur once or more often in a ring-shaped network. For this purpose, each subscriber device (TLN) transmits self-addressed address test packet information (ati) during the formation of an address table. If the respective subscriber device (TLN) receives the address test packet information (ati) in unmodified form, its address (a) occurs once. If the respective subscriber device (TLN) receives address test reply packet information (tai), its address (a) occurs at least twice. The subscriber device (TLN) with identical addresses (a) which is switched by the ring-shaped network essentially depends on the ring activation duration.
