A device for cutting sheet material, such as reconstituted tobacco, into strips comprises two members 1, 2, the member 1, at least, being rotatable and having sharp cutting ridges and the other member having blunt ridges, the linear velocities of one member being different from that of the other. As shown in Fig. 1, the members 1, 2 are both rotatable by means of gears 3, 4 and the ridges are of helical form. The blunt edges of the ridges 9 on the member 2 may be roughened over different portions of their peripheries in order to provide a different braking effect as the sheet material is being fed between the member, this effect producing a strip having a wavy formation. In modifications, the ridges may be circular instead of helical (Fig. 4) and may be formed as separate discs held together to form rollers, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a further modification, the cutting roller (31), Fig. 11 (not shown), is of frustoconical shape and co-operates with a parallel roller (35); such an arrangement produces a curved strip. The member 2 producing the restraining effect on the sheet may be formed as a flat grooved surface and given a rectilinear vibratory motion. Alternatively, the restraining member may be stationary or in the construction of Fig. 4 (not shown) rotated in the same or opposite directions as the cutting member or it may be allowed to rotate freely. Due to the different linear velocities of the two members, the strips of material are subjected to a longitudinal stress thereby causing them to break into short lengths. The ridges may be protected by a hard metallic coating e.g. chromium plating.</p> |
