<p>A construction of thermal print head is disclosed in which a common support (10) includes a plurality of substrates (12, 13, 14) on which selectively heatable print elements (19) of a plurality of print heads are carried. The substrates are arranged in spaced parallel relation such as to permit deposition of conductors (17, 18, 19, 20) and insulation layers on a face (15) of the substrates. Print element selection and drive circuits (33) may be mounted on the substratres and a printed circuit multi-conductor ribbon cable (22) provides connections to the print heads. The print heads print serially on an item (30) and may be operated to print different portions of a print impression in the same colour with one print ribbon (23) or may print differently coloured portions with different coloured ribbons (23, 24). The thermal print head may be used for printing a franking impression in a postage franking meter.</p> |
