A pneumatic tyre, eg a radial tyre, has transverse grooves (1-1) extending from one edge of the tread to the other and in a zone (A) they take a stepped course with portions (12, 13, 14, 15 and 16) being at an angle of 75 DEG with respect to the peripheral direction. Adjacent transverse grooves are interconnected by stepped longitudinal grooves (3, 4, 5).
