In a process for metered injection of fuel in a distributor-type fuel injection pump, the metered quantity of fuel is governed by the duration of closure of a solenoid valve (29) arranged in a connecting line between the working and discharge chambers of the pump. The duration of closure of the solenoid valve (29) is determined from the ratio of a theoretical angle of rotation of the pump piston (14) for the injection stroke, calculated in function of engine operating parameters, and a constant angle of rotation covered by a measurement window evaluated over time, multiplied by the flow time measured in the measurement window. To determine changes in engine speed between the time of evaluation of the measurement window and the injection of fuel, a metering window covering an identical angle is evaluated over time during the injection of fuel and a correction factor is calculated from the ratio of the metering and measurement window times and used to correct the measured duration of closure of the solenoid valve (29) during the next piston stroke.
